Pantry Challenge: Had To Run To The Store For One Item!

Today, I decided to make a recipe that used up a variety of items from my pantry.  I made Pasta Fagioli!  I put all the ingredients in.  I used only half the amount of ground beef that the recipe called for, but I had run out of spaghetti sauce.

Since I was running over to Target anyway to pick up a gift for a birthday, I looked for a deal and bought two jars of spaghetti sauce that were on sale for $1.79 each.  My new total for the week is still under my $50 budget.  My new total for the week is around $42.

Pantry Challenge: Save Money On Food At The Grocery Store

I went on my first shopping trip at the grocery store while doing the Pantry Challenge.  I have a budget of $50 per week to feed my family of four. Yesterday, I was able to get out of the grocery store   and I only spent $39.55!  I even bought a gallon of organic milk and organic hot dogs!  I mostly bought produce and I only bought enough to get me through the week.

What I have learned from my first shopping trip during the Pantry Challenge: We don't need much!  Produce goes bad, so only get what you need to get through that week.  Also, there are only 7 days in a week,  so you will need to make 21 meals.  It sounds like a lot, but breakfast is usually cereal or oatmeal and lunch is usually a sandwich and sides or leftovers from dinner, so you really only need to cook 7 meals.  If you can find 7 quick and easy and cheap dinner ideas, then you are set!

Make a meal plan for the week.  Include what you already have in your freezer and pantry and only buy the things you really need for the recipe to be complete when you go to the grocery store.

Pantry Challenge: Use Less Meat

Meat is one of the most expensive food groups to buy at the grocery store.  To cut back on your grocery bill and make meat last, use less meat.  Buy a smaller cut of meat and make more healthy side dished to fill everyone up.

A plate should consist of 1/4 meat, 1/4 vegetables, 1/4 fruit and 1/4 starch (like noodles or rice).

Instead of making a beef pot roast, you could make a beef stew and use the leftovers on leftover night or as lunch.

Other countries use meat sparingly as a flavoring instead of having it is the main dish for a meal.

Use less meat.  It will save you money and it is healthier!
