Recipe: Quick Caramelized Onions

Quick Caramelized Onions

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
2 teaspoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1 large onion, thinly sliced
1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme or rosemary (optional)

1. Combine the oil, sugar, vinegar and salt in a large skillet with a lid over medium-high heat and stir until the sugar is dissolved.  Add the onion and saute for a few minutes to start the browning process.

2. Reduce the heat to low, cover and cook for 10 minutes longer, stirring occasionally.  Sprinkle with fresh herbs, if desired, before serving.

  1. I love that you added some balsamic to the onions. I have trouble developing the color as I caramelize, but I bet the vinegar gives it a deep color. Thanks for sharing with Hearth and Soul!

  2. Another ingredient that adds color and a sweet flavor is brown sugar. Have fun cooking!
