Cheap and Free Kid's activity during the summer

Now that my children (4 & 5 years old) are finishing up their school years at preschool and Elementary school, I am trying to come up with free and cheap, fun things to do with them over the Summer.

Here are a few of my ideas:

  • Visit pick-your-own farms to pick our own fruits and vegetables.
  • Go for hikes in the mountains and at historical parks in our area.
  • Go to museums in our area.  We have tons of options since we live in the Washington DC area and all the Smithsonian's are free to get in to.   The only problem is the traffic getting to and from them.
  • Go to the Zoo.
  • Go swimming.
  • Playground hopping.  I like to visit different Elementary schools in the area to discover the great playgrounds in our area.
  • Play dates with friends from school.  We usually meet at parks, playgrounds, swimming pools or ice cream shops.
  • More kids gym classes.  I like to find low cost classes for the kids to take during the summer.  Most are offered indoors (air conditioning!).
  • Library programs.  Libraries offer tons of kids programs (reading, songs, crafts, dancing, languages) for free!  Plus we pick up fun books, DVD's, magazines and CD's while were there.
  • Free Kids Concerts are usually offered at the Mall.
Does anyone else have ideas for cheap or free fun for the kids during the summer?  I would love to hear your ideas!
